NEW DEHI: Semnior SP leader Azam Khan, who is in charge of the Kumbh Mela Management Committee,
resigned on Monday taking responsibility for the stampede that led to 36 deaths. The Uttar Pradesh government has blamed the railways for the tragedy.
"The UP government's responsibility was restricted to the mela venue only," Azam Khan said.
The death toll in the stampede at Allahabad railway station reached 36 today, with 14 more people succumbing to their injuries.
The incident occurred near the foot overbridge on platform number 6. The stampede, which took place at around 8.00pm on Sunday, also left many persons severely injured. Sources said majority of victims killed were elderly persons.
The tragic incident, reports said, took place when more than 1.5 lakh devotees thronged Allahabad junction to board return trains for their respective destinations after Mauni Amavasya Snan. The massive rush of devotees resulted in the breaking of railing on foot overbridge and subsequently the stampede.
Rs 1 lakh ex-gratia will be given to the next of kin of those killed in Allahabad stampede, railway minister P K Bansal has announced.
Bansal has rushed to Allahabad with Railway Board chairman for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
Bansal blamed huge rush of people for stampede at the foot-over-bridge at platform no. 6 of the Allahabad station.
At least 36 people were killed and scores of others injured on Sunday night in a stampede at Allahabad railway station as thousands of pilgrims were returning after a holy dip at the Mahakumbh.
Bansal said: "Till now death toll has reached 36. There has been no collapse of foot-over-bridge or any railing on the station. I want to clear that stampede occurred due to people reaching in large numbers. We had made arrangements before start of the Kumbh. We have come to know that people turned in large numbers resulting in stampede."
Admitting that there was lack of arrangements due to huge turn up of people, Bansal said: "It was not possible to accommodate a large numbers of devotees, who had reached railway station.
He also said that efforts are being made to decongest the station, which is overcrowded as thousands of pilgrims were there in the city to take holy dip on the occasion of 'Mauni Amavasya'.
The railways minister also informed about all arrangements being made at Allahabad. He said there are total 112 trains that pass through the Allahabad railway station and railways started 49 special trains for the Mahakumbh.
