NEW DELHI: Amid reports of private concessionaires showing no interest in highway projects, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) chairman on Thursday said that the target to construct or award 20 km highways per day is unsustainable. He said that achieving 50-60% of this target would be meaningful if the government manages to maintain this rate.
Singh was speaking at a seminar of highway development organised by FICCI. So far NHAI has awarded less than 1,000 km road against its original target of 7,700 km.
The NHAI chief also said that going overboard on taking up all highways on toll mode is also unsustainable since the government has its responsibility to provide minimum road for mobility to its people. "Moreover, there is need to rationalise our toll policy. You can't link the increase in toll with the annual inflation rate which is as high as 10%," he said.
