Politics hot up over minor girls' rape in Chhattisgarh, Jogi demands CBI probe

RAIPUR: Incident of sexual assault on minor girls at a tribal hostel in Chhattisgarh is now taking political twists with the opposition Congress and the ruling BJP locking horns over the death of a class four student whose mother had claimed two days ago that she was pregnant and died of related complications in August last year.

The minor girl in question was staying in the girls' ashram, being run by the Tribal Welfare Department, where a horrendous incident of a teacher and hostel watchman sexually exploiting minor girls for long had come to light, leading to their arrest and suspension of a number of officials of education and tribal welfare department.

Two days ago, former chief minister Ajit Jogi had presented before the media at Kanker a woman, who had claimed that her daughter had died due to pregnancy related complications in August last year after she took some local medicines for abortion. Her uncle was also present at the press conference.

Later, local BJP Member of Parliament Sohan Potai, BJP legislator Sumitra Markole and Gondwana Samaj president Narayan Singh Gora visited the family at their village.

Subsequently, the same family came up with a statement that the girl died of illness, denying that the girl was pregnant.

BJP leaders claimed that three Congress leaders had persuaded the family to make such a false statement offering them help to get a compensation of Rs 25 lakh and a job for one family member. Reacting to the development, former chief minister Ajit Jogi said "The sexual exploitation case of girls staying in tribal hostel is very sensitive. Since there is a contradiction in the statements of family members, the whole issue needs to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation".

Congress working Committee (CWC) member Mohsina Kidwai, a Rajya Sabha member, and other Congress leaders had visited Narharpur block and the tribal hostel and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, which they described as a shameful.

According to police, a number of girls staying in the tribal student hostel had complained that they were being sexually exploited by a contract teacher and a watchman. The girls in question, aged between nine to 12 years, had undergone medical examination.
